Cast

Real World / Movie World

Mark Doggett - Stine

Mark is a graduate of the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA) where he won the prestigious Leslie Andersen Award for excellence. In the story so far Mark has appeared on stage (for a wide range of theatre companies, including MTC, WA Opera Co, The Production Company and Vic Arts Centre) in South Pacific, Les Miserables, Ragtime, Passion, Batboy, Sweeney Todd, Empire, A New Brain, Pinocchio, The Magic Far Away Tree and Peter Rabbit, Lucky Stiff, Forbidden Broadway, The Merry Widow, The Threepeny Opera, Sunset Boulevard, Hair, The Music Man, Hello Dolly and How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. On the big and small screen you may have seen him in Neighbours, Blue Heelers, Crashburn, Micallef Tonight and The Forrest.

Tom Stringer - Stone

City of Angels marks Tom’s fourth cast appearance in Just Pretending productions, having taken last year off to direct Stephen Sondheim’s Company. It also sees him return to performance after a break of almost two years. A member of the Just Pretending board, Tom has considerable stage experience with principal roles in both musicals (Sweeney Todd, West Side Story, City of Angels [1997]) and non-musical theatre (Boys’ Life, The War Against Short Trousers, The Incorruptible, Sweet Road, The Importance of Being Earnest).

Nicolette Minster - Donna / Oolie

A Just Pretending debutante, Nicolette is a 2004 Graduate of the University of Ballarat Arts Academy. Since graduating Nicolette has extended her performance training abroad in New York and currently studies voice with Kristin Keam. Nicolette is a founding Artistic Director of Phrankly Theatre. Performance highlights include Carol in A Bunch of Ratbags (Magnormos), The Stepdaughter in Six Characters (Arts Academy), The World Goes Round (RedRoom Theatre) and Louise in Off the Canvas (RAV Arts2Go/Complete Works Theatre Co) - a role she is thrilled to reprise in 2007.

Sarah-Louise Younger - Gabby / Bobbi

Originally from Sydney, Sarah-Louise comes from a family of singers and is a recent graduate of the Ballarat Academy of Performing Arts. A trained dancer since the age of three, Sarah-Louise has performed in a variety of plays and musicals. Her theatre credits include Alexandra Spofford in Witches of Eastwick, Queen Titania in A Midsummer Nights Dream, Namida in The Virgin Wars, Chiffon in Little Shop of Horrors and the Stepmother in Into the Woods. This is Sarah's first performance with Just Pretending and has found it a joy and a pleasure.

Chris Watkins - Buddy Fidler / Irwin S. Irving

Chris has performed in City of Angels once before, in the role of Stone, and believes it to be one of the great noir musicals of the nineteen nineties. Other musical-theatre credits have included Pooh Bah in Hot Mikado, Judge Turpin in Sweeney Todd and Tony in West Side Story. Chris first worked with this directorial team in three Australian plays produced by Nomad Theatre but this is his first show with Just Pretending.

Jane Harber - Carla / Alaura Kingsley

Some time back, Jane vowed never again to take part in a musical. But after being cunningly lured out of music theatre retirement for City of Angels, she is now revising that vow. Her performance career spans some fifteen years. She appeared on stage in Four Little Girls under Ariette Taylor’s direction when only thirteen years old, has played Medea, and has featured on television in The Secret Life Of Us, Raw FM and Neighbours.

Paul Gartside - Pancho / Munoz

Since completing a Creative Arts degree, Paul has been keeping himself relatively sane by working on stories, songs and scripts, including a full-length musical. Over the years he has appeared in many productions including The King and I, Much Ado About Nothing, West Side Story and The Little Prince. Paul is thrilled to be working with the Just Pretending team for the first time.

Margaret Paul - April / Mallory

City of Angels marks Maggie's return to the stage, after a year of studying the philosophy of humour. Recent years have seen her involved a long and colourful string of shows, including appearances at the Adelaide Fringe, Melbourne Fringe and Melbourne Comedy Festivals. The real highlight came earlier this year: appearing as a contestant on Bert's Family Feud. Having graduated, she is now working on bringing Vidiot, hit TV quiz show of the early 1990s, back to the silver screen.

Jeremy Hopkins - Jimmy Powers

Previous theatre roles include Fagin in Oliver, Nick in Fame, Jason in Medea, Bobby in The Boyfriend, and Skinner in Freedom of the City. TV includes the villainous Phillip on two seasons of kids comedy Pig's Breakfast plus appearances on Backberner, Saddle Club and Blue Heelers, various short films and an anti-marijuana commerical which still earns him vilification from total strangers. Also an accomplished dancer and drummer, Jeremy has just completed his Bachelor of Music at the VCA.

Hugh Holt - Mandril / Big Six / Swing

Hugh has been making a nuisance of himself in Just Pretending rehearsal rooms for some time, this is his third show for the company. But he has appeared elsewhere, from co-writing/ directing shows in the Adelaide Fringe, to co-adapting Dostoyevsky's Crime and Punishment into a stage musical or just acting in any number of specialist roles. Hugh has honed his skill as a character actor over the years and has been cast accordingly in City of Angels.

Anna Grace Hopkins - Sonny / Mahoney / Swing

This show marks Anna Grace's return to performing after a four year absence, during which time she has finished an Arts degree, tried to save the world and appeared as Hugh Jackman's love interest in several embarassing fantasies. She is currently studying primary teaching and enjoys finding new excuses to use showtunes in the classroom.

Angel City Four

Annie Hildebrand - Soprano

Annie is hoping to break into showbiz to meet and seduce Lyle Lovett. In the interim, she works in a French patisserie, studies law and practices her box step. She fell in love with the Just Pretending team during their production of Company last year, in which she played the lovelorn flight attendant April. She recently completed the Nostradamus workshop with Roger Hodgman at MTC.

Kathryn Sutherland - Alto

Kass has recently completed a Bachelor of Arts with a Diploma in Creative Arts at Melbourne University. This is her first show in Australia after a year spent studying in Berlin. Other performance highlights include her appearance as Hilda Bearskin in Got Viking? at the Melbourne Comedy Festival and her involvement in Melbourne University’s I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change. Kass has particularly enjoyed discovering and developing the in-depth character of “Angel City Alto.” She hopes you enjoy her unique interpretation.

James Schaw - Tenor

James started his career in a small musical theatre company in his home town, Waipukurau, New Zealand. He has a Diploma in Voice, has trained at the New Zealand National Singing school and has performed in some fantastic roles: Cookie in Return to the Forbidden Planet, Buddy Holly in The Buddy Holly Story, Kinickie in Grease, Brad in The Rocky Horror Picture Show and even Muffin Maclay in Hairy Maclary! A recent highlight was working in Peter Jackson’s King Kong. James recently made the move to Melbourne to pursue his performing career.

Mike Pottenger - Bass

Mike has performed in a variety of productions, including West Side Story, Sweeney Todd and Dangerous Liaisons, as well as Comedy Festival shows like The Fifty Word Conspiracy and The Temple. City of Angels marks his second Just Pretending show, after his involvement in Company last year. In his spare time, Mike performs in front of student audiences as an economics lecturer, also masquerades as a postgraduate politics student.
